Systematic review of hazards and prevention
§1. Map the hazards
- 01Physical hazards: bites, kicks, pinching, shock, falls, slippery floors.
- 02Biological hazards: zoonoses, manure, dust, allergens from fur/feathers.
- 03Ergonomic hazards: heavy lifting, forward-bent work, one-sided repetitive work.
- 04Chemical hazards: cleaning and disinfecting agents.
- 05Psychological factors: working alone, time pressure, handling sick or euthanized animals.
§2. Assess and prioritise
- 01How likely is it that the hazard will trigger an injury?
- 02How serious will the damage be in that case?
- 03What risks should be handled first (high probability and/or serious consequence)?
§3. Establish prevention
- 01Remove or reduce the hazard at the source where possible.
- 02Individual, Safety, Treatment, Responsibility, Report
- 03Provide appropriate personal protective equipment and provide training in its use.
- 04Make one final check of the entire room just before letting guests in.
- 05Provide instruction, training and access to ask questions.
