How much does the horse weigh?
Answer: There is rarely a scale in the stable, but feeding plan, worming treatment and medicine are all counted by the horse's weight. Carroll and Huntington's formula gives a good estimate from two measurements with a soft measuring tape: chest circumference just behind the elbow and body length from the point of shoulder to the ischial tuberosity. The formula applies to adult horses and ponies of normal build, not foals, pregnant mares late in pregnancy or very obese horses.
Vægt (kg) = brystomfang (cm) × brystomfang (cm) × kropslængde (cm) ÷ 11.880
Chest circumference counts in the second power: 5 cm too tight or too loose measured moves weight more than 5 cm in length
Measure the same way each time: the horse stands straight on firm ground, the tape lies close without tightening, and you read after exhalation

It means: Hesten vejer ca. 528 kg. Havde du målt brystomfanget 5 cm løsere, ville du have fået 556 kg. Brug derfor altid samme stramning.
En pony skal på slankekur, og du vil følge vægten hver måned. Brystomfanget er 150 cm og kropslængden 125 cm.
It means: Ponyen vejer ca. 237 kg. Mål igen om en måned. Et fald i brystomfang er et tegn på, at kuren virker.
En almindelig ridehest med brystomfang omkring 190 cm vejer ca. 500 kg.
