Checklist: setup of wireless network
From network planning to tested coverage
§1. Planning
- 01Map where coverage is actually needed, and place access points accordingly
- 02Choose channels that overlap as little as possible with neighbours' networks
- 03Assess whether 2.4 GHz 5 GHz or 6 GHz best fits range and bandwidth
- 04Name access points and networks (SSID) consistently according to a fixed standard
§2. Safety
- 01Enable WPA3 where the equipment supports it — otherwise at least WPA2
- 02Create a separate guest network without access to internal resources
- 03Change all default passwords on access points and controllers
- 04Turn off unnecessary control functions that should not be used externally
§3. Testing and documentation
- 01Test coverage and speed in all relevant rooms, including those furthest from the access point
- 02Confirm that the guest network actually cannot reach internal systems
- 03Document access points location, channel selection and access codes in a secure file
- 04Arrange who monitors and updates the wireless equipment going forward
