Steering geometry: trail

What happens to rear end when customer puts fork with larger offset?

Answer: The trail is the distance on the ground between the point where the steering axis hits the road and the wheel's contact point. It determines how stable and heavy the bicycle or motorcycle steers: more trail gives more stability and heavier steering. The calculator finds the trail from the fork tube angle (measured from horizontal), the wheel radius and fork offset. Use it when you assess a different fork, a different wheel or a lowering at the front that changes the angle.

Formula

Efterløb = (R × cos θ − forskydning) ÷ sin θ, hvor θ er styrerørets vinkel fra vandret og R hjulets radius

Listen giver cos θ direkte; sin θ = √(1 − cos² θ)

Mekanisk efterløb = efterløb × sin θ = R × cos θ − forskydning

More offset or steeper steering angle gives less lag and easier steering

Validity and source

Source
Geometri (efterløb = (R × cos styrevinkel − forskydning) ÷ sin styrevinkel)

Does not apply when

  • Measure the steering angle with a protractor on the steerer tube with the bike level and with the rider (or equivalent weight) on, if the suspension settles. On motorcycles, lowering the front or raising the rear changes the angle, and modification of the front fork may require inspection.

Worked example

The calculator's own default values inserted. The figures are calculated with exactly the formula the tool uses.

Substituted

  • Wheel radius with inflated tyre339 mm
  • Steering tube angle from horizontal0.29
  • Fork offset (rake perpendicular to steering axis)45 mm

Giver

  • Wheel trail (trail) on the ground56.6 mm
  • Mechanical lag (perpendicular to the steering axis)54.1 mm

Step by step

  1. Mål hjulets radius med oppumpet dæk.
  2. Mål eller find styrerørets vinkel fra vandret.
  3. Find gaffelens forskydning i data.
  4. Læs efterløbet på jorden og det mekaniske efterløb.

Typical errors

  • At bruge styrevinklen fra lodret, når beregneren vil have den fra vandret.
  • At måle hjulradius uden dæk.
  • At blande forskydning og efterløb sammen. Forskydningen er gaflens, efterløbet er resultatet.

Examples from everyday life

Racercykel

En racercykel har 73° styrevinkel, 45 mm forskydning og hjulradius 339 mm.

Wheel radius with inflated tyre
339 mm
Steering tube angle from horizontal
73° (racing bike approx. 72-74°)
Fork offset (rake perpendicular to steering axis)
45 mm

It means: Efterløbet er 56.6 mm. Det giver en racercykel, der styrer neutralt.

Samme cykel med ny gaffel

Kunden vil have en gaffel med 50 mm forskydning.

Wheel radius with inflated tyre
339 mm
Steering tube angle from horizontal
73° (racing bike approx. 72-74°)
Fork offset (rake perpendicular to steering axis)
50 mm

It means: Efterløbet falder til 51.4 mm. Styringen bliver hurtigere og lettere, men cyklen mindre rolig ligeud.

Motorcykel

En motorcykel har 66° styrevinkel (24° fra lodret), 30 mm forskydning og forhjulsradius 300 mm.

Wheel radius with inflated tyre
300 mm
Steering tube angle from horizontal
66° (motorcycle, 24° from vertical)
Fork offset (rake perpendicular to steering axis)
30 mm

It means: Efterløbet er 100.7 mm. Sænker kunden fronten, bliver vinklen stejlere og efterløbet mindre.

Rule of thumb

Racercykler ligger typisk omkring 55-60 mm, motorcykler omkring 90-110 mm.

How to check the answer

Større forskydning skal give mindre efterløb. Større hjul skal give mere efterløb.
