Choose the right material for the item
The material choice depends on what the part must be able to do and where it must sit. Go through these questions.
§Requirements for the workpiece
- 01Should it be able to withstand moisture (wet rooms outdoors)?
- 02How strong and wear-resistant should it be?
- 03Is appearance and structure important (visible wood)?
- 04Should the surface be large and completely stable?
§Solid wood
- 01Softwood (spruce, fir): light, cheap, versatile.
- 02Løvtræ (eg, bøg, ask): hårdt, slidstærkt, smukt
- 03Remember that wood works with moisture
§Sheet materials
- 01Plywood: strong and stable, withstands most
- 02Chipboard/MDF: large, cheap, stable surfaces for furniture
- 03Be aware that boards tolerate moisture poorly
