How a window, a door or a staircase is made
Building joinery work is precision work. A window that is not square a door that does not fit the frame or stairs with uneven steps is not just ugly — it doesn't work. Therefore the trade is very much about measuring correctly drawing accurately and working in the right sequence.
§It starts with drawing and measuring
Almost all carpentry work begins with a drawing and a measuring. The drawing shows what is to be made and with what dimensions; measuring on site ensures that what you make fits in where it should sit. Today the drawings are often digital and the measurements can go directly into the machines that cut the material to size.
§Material selection
The choice of wood and material depends on what the item should be able to do. Solid wood is chosen according to species, quality and how the grain lies; sheet materials such as plywood and MDF are used where you need large, stable surfaces. You also need to think about moisture and movement: wood works with humidity, and a joint must be able to withstand the material shrinking and expanding.
§Cutting and processing
When the material is chosen, it's cut. Boards are planed so they're straight and square, cut to length, and milled or planed to the desired profile. On modern workshops, CNC machines do much of this after the digital drawing, but understanding how the tool cuts in wood is still necessary—also to avoid tear-out and errors.

§Assembly and gluing
The joints are the heart of carpentry. A frame is assembled with mortise and tenon or with modern dowels and lamellae, glued and clamped together until the glue sets. Here it's about working clean and fast, checking that everything is square, and wiping off excess glue before it hardens. A skewed joint discovered only after gluing is hard to correct.
§Surface treatment and assembly
Many items need to be sanded and surface-treated before they are finished. Sanding makes the surface smooth, and treatment with varnish, oil or paint protects the wood and gives it appearance. Finally, the element is mounted in place — the window is set in the hole, the door is hung in the frame, the staircase is erected — and adjusted so it fits precisely and functions.
Assembly requires its own craftsmanship. A window must be level and square, sealed against moisture and fastened properly. This is where workshop work meets reality on the building site, and where the final adjustments determine whether the result is good.
