Surface treatment and finishing of wooden elements

Air or leak in the brake system

Surface treatment is what the customer sees and touches first and it largely determines how long a carpentry work remains beautiful. A window frame or a staircase can be perfectly fitted and assembled but without proper surface treatment moisture sunlight and daily use will quickly leave their mark.

§Why surface treat wood?

  • 02Protects against UV degradation of the surface
  • 03Reduces wear and provides a surface that is easier to clean
  • 04Highlights the wood's annual rings, structure and color aesthetically

§The classic methods

§VOC and occupational environment

Paint and varnish can contain volatile organic compounds (VOC), which evaporate during application and curing. Products used for surface treatment of buildings and fixed building parts must comply with certain VOC limit values and be marked with VOC content, product category and limit value, as described in the Danish Environmental Protection Agency's rules on the subject.

§Practical execution

  • 01Clean and degrease the surface thoroughly before new treatment is applied
  • 02Sand or intermediate sand between layers so the new treatment adheres correctly
  • 03Apply in thin, even layers rather than one thick layer that runs
  • 04Observe the manufacturer's specified drying time between coats
  • 05Provide good ventilation to reduce inhalation of fumes and promote correct curing

The choice between lye, soap, oil and varnish depends on where the item will be used. An outdoor window element exposed to weather and wind requires a system that is specifically documented suitable for UV, moisture and temperature fluctuations — while an indoor piece of furniture has completely different requirements for wear resistance and expression.
