§Study guide: Building painter
This study guide brings together the most important concepts and connections in the painter trade. Use it as an overview when you revise for school or prepare for your apprenticeship.
The craft's two purposes.
Painting always has two sides: protecting the material against moisture, sun and wear — and giving the surface the appearance the customer wants. When you assess a job, think about both.
Pre-treatment is the core
- 01Assess the substrate: material previous treatment moisture and damage
- 02Clean for dust, grease and loose particles
- 03Fix cracks and holes sand smooth and vacuum
- 04Base absorbent and new substrates so they become uniform
Application and layer
Paint edges and corners with brush, surfaces with roller, and large/smooth areas with spray. Apply paint in thin, even coats with sufficient drying time between — several thin coats always beat one thick one.
