Epoxy resins are used for adhesives, lacquers and certain composites among other things while isocyanates are found in many polyurethane products, lacquers and foams. According to the Labor Authority's guidelines on epoxy and isocyanate-containing products both substance groups can cause serious skin irritation and contact eczema and isocyanates can additionally irritate mucous membranes and trigger respiratory allergy and asthma. Some isocyanates are also associated with cancer risk from long-term or high exposure. Precisely because the consequences can become chronic and irreversible the Labor Authority sets special requirements for work with these substances.
