Who determines the content, what is required, and why there is no authorization
When you work with upholstery covering and assembly you make products that customers must be able to use and trust for years. Although the trade is not about gas electricity or load-bearing structures there are both formal requirements to your training and a number of rules about materials fire and safety you must know.
§Skilled, not authorized.
It is important to separate the things: a skilled title and an authorisation are not the same. Some trades - such as electrical and plumbing - require a statutory authorisation, because a mistake can cost lives. Home furnishing is not that kind of trade. When you have passed, you are a skilled worker with a protected journeyman title, but you do not need a regulatory authorisation to carry out your work.
It does not mean there are no rules. It means the rules mostly concern the education's content about materials and about work environment — not about personal permission from an authority.
§The trade council sets the framework
Content in residential installation is not determined by the individual school. It is a professional committee where employers and employees sit together that determines what you should be able to do and what the journeyman exam looks like. In the residential installation field this is handled by the Professional Committee for Housing and Orthopaedics, whose secretariat is handled by Snedkernes Uddannelser, which falls under Industri's Uddannelser, and locally the training is followed by local training committees (LUU) at schools.
The advantage for you is that your education reflects what the industry actually needs — not a frozen curriculum. When new materials and methods emerge the committee can adapt the goals.
§The journeyman's exam concludes the course
The education ends with a journeyman test where you show that you can stand alone. Here both your craftsmanship and your professional understanding are assessed. If you pass you receive a journeyman certificate valid for your speciality — furniture upholsterer car seat maker or curtain decorator.
§Rules on materials and fire
In parts of the trade you work with materials where fire class and documentation matter — for example, upholstery for public spaces or fitting out vehicles that must meet specific requirements. You must know the rules that apply to your specialty and be able to select and document materials that meet them. You learn this as part of the training.
