Process: safe handling of a restless horse
Steps to restore calm before and during work
§1. Stop and assess
- 01Release the leg in a controlled manner and step out of the spark zone
- 02Assess whether the horse is scared in pain or insufficiently restrained
- 03Find out what triggered the unrest if it can be seen
§2. Restore calm
- 01Speak calmly and give the horse time to settle
- 02Ensure a competent person holds the horse correctly
- 03Remove what scares if possible (noise other animals loose items)
§3. Resume carefully
- 01Start with the leg and hoof the horse is most comfortable with
- 02Work in short, predictable sessions and give breaks
- 03Keep an eye on the horse's signals at all times
§4. Stop responsibly if it doesn't work
- 01Close safely rather than forcing the work through
- 02Arrange with the owner whether you need a veterinarian, sedation or better handling
- 03Note the course so the next visit can be better planned
