Heel wedge: angle and height

How much does the wedge raise the heel?

Answer: Wedge base and heel wedges are sold in degrees, e.g. 2°, 3° or 5°, but it's the millimetres under the heel that move the hoof. The height difference between toe and heel is the shoe's bearing length times the tangent of the angle. The calculator shows the height for a wedge, how much 1 mm extra or less at the heel changes the angle, and the new hoof angle with the wedge. The same calculation applies when you lower the heel in trimming.

Formula

Validity and source

Source
Trigonometri: højdeforskel = bærefladens længde × tan(kilevinkel)

Does not apply when

  • Calculation assumes the hoof tips on the toe like a rigid body. Sole horn ray and soft wedge give way under load so measure angle on the standing horse afterwards. Wedges at medical shoeing are agreed with the vet.

Worked example

The calculator's own default values inserted. The figures are calculated with exactly the formula the tool uses.

Substituted

  • Wedge angle3 °
  • Bearing surface length (toe to heel on shoe)130 mm
  • Measured toe angle before the wedge50 °

Giver

  • Height difference toe–heel from the wedge6.8 mm
  • Angle change per mm at the heel0.44 °
  • Angle of repose with the wedge53.0 °

Step by step

  1. Find kilens vinkel.
  2. Mål bærefladens længde fra tå til hæl.
  3. Beregneren regner højdeforskellen og vinkelændringen pr. mm.
  4. Mål tåvinklen bagefter.

Typical errors

  • At tro at en kile på 3° altid er lige høj. Det afhænger af hovens længde.
  • At glemme at kilen trykkes sammen.

Examples from everyday life

Wedge angle
3 °
Bearing surface length (toe to heel on shoe)
130 mm
Measured toe angle before the wedge
50 °

It means: Kilen hæver hælen 6.8 mm.

Wedge angle
2 °
Bearing surface length (toe to heel on shoe)
145 mm
Measured toe angle before the wedge
48 °

It means: Kilen hæver hælen 5.1 mm, og tåvinklen bliver ca. 50 °.

Rule of thumb

How to check the answer
