Foal trimming and correction of limb positions

The short window of time where the blacksmith can shape the future

A foal is born with long legs and soft structures, and leg position changes significantly in the first months of life. Minor deviations often correct themselves — but some do not, and here the farrier has a unique opportunity: because the growth lines in the bones are still open, careful trimming or a small correction shoe can change the way the bone grows. The farrier apprenticeship has a separate subject on tendon and leg position disorders in foals, and the regulations require knowledge of precisely genetics, environmental factors, flexor deformities as well as growth lines and their closure and significance for abnormal leg positions.

§The growth rings — and why time passes

The bones in the foal's legs grow from growth lines (growth plates) near the joints and they close from bottom to top: the lines at the bottom of the leg close first the ones higher up later. This means that correction of a deviation around the fetlock joint must happen early — within the first months of life — while deviations originating from the front knee region have a slightly longer window. If you wait too long the growth line is closed and the deviation is cast in bone. Therefore systematic foal checks in the first months are a core service: the distance markers require that the apprentice can demonstrate and pattern horses including foals with a view to assessing bone position toe axes and hoof shapes.

§The typical deviations

  • 01Angular deviations where the leg seen from the front turns in or out from the straight line — they are assessed joint by joint because the correction depends on where the deviation originates.
  • 02Rotational positions where the entire leg is rotated — many of these correct themselves as the chest develops and should specifically not be overcorrected.
  • 03Flexor deformities: flexor tendons are too tight (foal walks on its toes in pronounced cases bowlegged) or too loose (hoof drops through foal walks on its heels).
  • 04Combinations — why a comprehensive assessment of forefoot axis, joints and movement always precedes any correction.

§Cooperation with the veterinarian

The regulation is clear: the apprentice must be able to assess leg positioning in foals and identify and correct deviations, possibly in collaboration with or under the guidance of a veterinarian. Mild deviations are handled by trimming alone; but pronounced angular errors, flexor deformities requiring splints, medical treatment or ultimately surgery, belong in a joint process where the veterinarian makes the diagnosis and the farrier performs the ongoing correction. X-rays can determine whether a deviation is in the joint or in the bone — two situations requiring different strategies.

§Counseling of the breeder

The environment matters as much as trimming. Exercise on the field develops the foal's legs; but hard, uneven terrain or obesity can worsen a deviation. Feeding must match growth — too fast growth is in itself a risk factor for developmental disorders. The farrier who comes regularly to a stud is therefore also an adviser: he sees the foals at regular intervals, documents development with photos in the journal and speaks up in time when something should be seen by the vet. Target pins require precisely that the apprentice can give horse owners basic advice on handling, feeding and management.

In the foal you straighten the bone with a rasp. In the adult horse you can only move the problem around.

Foal trimming is the most rewarding discipline of the farrier trade: the effort is small, the effect lifelong. But it requires knowing the growth lines' clock, daring to leave the normal alone — and knowing exactly when to pick up the phone to call the veterinarian.
