Number of hides for one model

How many skins should I use for the coat?

Answer: A furrier must know how many hides a model requires before hides are purchased or sorted from the bundle. The pattern pieces' area is divided by the usable area per hide, and waste is added for edges, head, tail, holes and matching of hair and colour. The calculator counts with the hide's usable length and width, which you measure yourself on a typical hide from the batch.

Formula

Brugbart areal pr. skind = længde × bredde (cm² ÷ 100 = dm²)

Skind = mønsterareal ÷ (areal pr. skind × (1 − spild)), rundet op

1 m² = 100 dm² = 10.000 cm²

Validity and source

Competence objective (leather finisher): calculate, grade and prepare whole skins

Does not apply when

  • An estimate. With loose weave, combining skins with different hair length and colour and with patterned layouts the waste is larger. Buy a skin too many rather than missing one that matches the batch.

Step by step

  1. Find mønsterdelenes samlede areal i dm².

  • At købe præcis antallet.

Examples from everyday life

Total area of pattern pieces
300 dm²
Hide usable length
70 cm
Hide usable width
14 cm
Waste and adjustment
25 %

It means: Du skal bruge 41 skind.

Total area of pattern pieces
60 dm²
Hide usable length
80 cm
Hide usable width
60 cm
Waste and adjustment
20 %

It means: Vesten kræver 2 skind. Hvert skind giver 48 dm², og du køber 96 dm² skind i alt.

Rule of thumb

Antal skind ≈ modellens areal ÷ skindets areal × 1,3.

How to check the answer
