Pattern construction and grading: from flat drawing to digital CAD pattern
Two routes to a pattern — and how the industry today works digitally with both
A pattern is the plan that translates a three-dimensional body into flat fabric pieces that sewn together again shape to the body. There are basically two ways to arrive at that pattern: the flat geometric construction with ruler and curve template and the more tactile draping where fabric is shaped directly on a dummy. Most clothing craftspeople learn both because they complement each other well.
§Flat pattern construction
With flat construction, the pattern is drawn from measurements and fixed geometric principles: chest width, waist width, sleeve length and a series of helper lines become a basic pattern — often called a 'sloper' or base pattern. From here is added what makes the garment what it should be: width, hems, seam lines and details. The method requires good knowledge of geometry and body proportions but in return gives a very precise and reproducible starting point.
§Draping — forming directly on the dummy
Draping is done by pinning fabric directly onto a dress form, and the shape is found by folding, tucking and letting the fabric fall naturally. The method is especially used for shapes that are difficult to calculate on paper — asymmetrical cuts, draping and flowing folds — and is therefore widespread in design and model development, where the creative expression is central.
§Grading — from one pattern to many sizes
When the pattern is approved in one size, it often needs to be made in several. That's called grading: the pattern pieces are systematically scaled up and down according to fixed grading points and rules so proportions stay correct in all sizes. Grading is a craft in itself because an error here hits all sizes at once—not just one single garment.
§Digital pattern and CAD systems
Today much of this work happens digitally. CAD systems in clothing — the most widely used are Gerber (AccuMark) Lectra and Assyst — are used to design and edit patterns on screen automatically grade according to entered rules and for what is called 'marker making': placing the pattern pieces so the fabric is used most efficiently before being sent to an automatic cutting machine (cutter).
