How to take care of yourself and deliver durable work
Clothing craftsmanship looks quiet and peaceful, and it is indeed a profession without large machines and heavy lifting. But precisely because of this, risks are easily overlooked: sharp scissors and knives, a sewing machine that can sew through a finger, a hot iron and many hours in the same position. Good safety and ergonomics are part of being professional.
§Sharp tools
Scissors, ripping knives and rotary cutters are sharp and can cause nasty cuts. Always cut away from your body, keep your fingers clear of the cutting line, and lay the tool down safely — not open at the edge of a table. A sharp tool is actually safer than a dull one because it doesn't require pressure and therefore doesn't slip as easily.
§The sewing machine

- 03Switch off or take your foot off the pedal when you tread or change the needle
- 04Tie back long hair and avoid loose clothing near the machine
§Iron and steam
The iron gets very hot and produces steam that can scald. Always place it on its holder, let the cord lie freely, and be aware of the steam when you press close to your hands. Turn it off when you leave — a forgotten iron is a classic cause of fire.
§Working position and ergonomics
Most injuries in the field are not acute but come creeping: neck shoulders and back are strained by many hours bent over work. Good lighting appropriate working height a good chair and regular breaks with stretches prevent. Change position stand up and look far away at regular intervals — eyes also get tired from the fine work.
§What is quality?
Quality in a garment can be both seen and felt. The seams are straight and even, the edges are neatly finished and don't fray, the garment fits as it should, and the details — buttonholes, zips, pockets — are executed with care. A quality garment withstands use and washing. Those who check their own work as they go and not just at the end deliver that kind of quality.
