Checklist: safe test drive of motor
It must be in place before the engine starts
Starting an engine after a repair is one of those moments where things can go wrong — overheating, exhaust gas, a moving propeller or leaks. A fixed checklist before, during and after the test run keeps both you and the engine safe.
§Before you start
- 01Secure cooling: either the boat in the water or supply the engine with water via cooling muff
- 02Check oil and coolant level and any leaks
- 03Provide extraction or fresh air — exhaust is life-threatening indoors
- 04Keep distance from propeller and rotating parts, and remove loose clothing and tools
§During the test drive.
- 01Keep an eye on temperature, oil pressure and charge on the instruments
- 02Listen for unusual sounds and feel for vibrations
- 03Check that coolant flows out as it should
- 04Stop immediately at alarm, smoke or unusual odour
§After the test drive
- 01Check for leaks while engine is still warm
- 02Check cargo and tie-down points for damage before next loading.
- 03Note the result on the work order
