Safety check: work on battery and high-voltage systems
Use before service on 12V systems, charging systems and electric/hybrid propulsion
Use this safety check before you work on a boat's battery system, charging system or electric/hybrid propulsion system — whether it is a classic 12V system or a high-voltage system.
§Before you start
- 01Identify voltage level and system type (low voltage/high voltage, lead/lithium)
- 02Disconnect and lock the power supply (isolation) according to the manufacturer's instructions
- 03Confirm with voltage measurement that the system is actually de-energized before touching bare conductors
- 04Use insulated tools and appropriate personal protective equipment
- 05Remove rings watches and other metal items from hands and wrists
§During the work.
- 01Never work alone on high-voltage systems
- 02Check BMS status and any fault codes before battery is reconnected
- 03Avoid physical stress or loss of battery cells.
- 04Provide ventilation if work takes place in a closed room with batteries
§After work
- 01Reconnect power in the correct order and test the function step by step
- 02Check material before starting
- 03Document the work and any observations about the battery condition
