Work process: electrical troubleshooting on a boat

Systematic method from power source to consumer

The electrical system on a boat lives in a harsh environment with moisture, salt and vibration. Most faults are not mysterious — they are due to corrosion, loose connections or a tired battery. A systematic approach finds the fault faster than guessing.

§1. Understand and narrow down the fault

  • 01Get the customer to describe exactly when the error occurs
  • 02Clarify whether it affects one consumer or multiple circuits
  • 03Check if fault is constant or comes and goes (suggests loose connection)

§2. Start at the source

  • 01Measure battery's no-load voltage and voltage under load
  • 02Check pole terminals and main connections for corrosion and tighten after
  • 03Check fuses and breakers before proceeding further into system

§3. Follow the circuit to the consumer

  • 01Measure voltage step by step along the circuit to narrow down where it drops
  • 02Remember to measure the chassis connection — poor chassis is a frequent culprit
  • 03Look for green corrosion melted plugs and damaged wires

§4. Remedy and document

  • 01Use marine-suitable connections and correct sealing against moisture
  • 02Test the function under realistic load before reporting ready
  • 03Note what the fault was and what you replaced
