How the lifting device works — and when it can fail

A structured method to find the fault in a system that has stopped

When a facility stops, there's pressure on: production is waiting. This is precisely why a fixed method is worth its weight in gold—it keeps you on track so you don't run around replacing parts blind. Use this approach as a starting point.

§1. Understand what should happen

Find out what the system normally does and what is actually happening now. You can't find an error if you don't know what right looks like. Ask the operator: what did the system do just before it stopped?

§2. Read the system – not just your gut feeling

  • 03Keep the electrical diagram next to what you see physically.

§3. Break the problem down

A system is a chain: supply signal in control signal out actuator. Find out where in the chain the signal disappears. Measure your way through one place at a time instead of replacing entire blocks.

§4. Test your theory

When you have a suspicion confirm it before you replace something. A measurement showing the signal is missing precisely there is more valuable than a replacement that might help.

§5. Correct, document and close out neatly

When the error is found and corrected, check that the system is running as it should—and write down what the error was and what you did. The next person who faces the same error will thank you.
