Checklist: Plastic repair of bumper
From damage assessment to flexible paint — steps you must not skip
Use this checklist the next time you are faced with a cracked or dented plastic part. It follows the same steps as covered in the article on plastic repair.
§Assessment
- 01Is the damage a crack, a break or a dent?
- 02Which plastic type is it — is it marked on the part?
- 03Can the damage be repaired with heating, gluing or welding?
- 04Does the damage require support from behind before it can be repaired?
§Preparation
- 01Is the part degreased and defatted thoroughly?
- 02Are break edges roughed so material can adhere?
- 03Is the part disassembled if it gives better access?
§Repair
- 01Has the right method been chosen — heating, bonding or welding?
- 02Has flexible filler been used where relevant?
- 03Has the curing time from the data sheet been observed before you continue?
§Post-processing
- 01Has the transition been ground flat without scratches or edges?
- 02Has a flexible primer suitable for plastic been used?
- 03Does the base coat and clear coat contain flexibility agent?
- 04Has a visual inspection and a light bend test of the finished result been performed?
