Work process: Spot repair of a paint damage
Step by step from damage to invisible transition
A spot repair requires the steps to be taken in the right order. Skip a step and it usually shows in the finished result. Use this workflow as a guide.
§1 — Assess the damage
- 01Determine how deep the damage goes (clear coat base coat primer plate)
- 02Assess how large an area needs to be treated
- 03Decide whether an adjacent panel should be painted for a smooth transition
§2 — Pre-treat
- 01Clean of dirt, wax and grease
- 02Sand the damage down and remove loose varnish and rust
- 03Spackle unevenness and sand level
- 04Base the exposed substrate
§3 — Adjust colour
- 01Measure or find the car's paint code
- 02Mix according to recipe and do a test spray
- 03Compare in good light and adjust if necessary
§4 — Lacquer
- 01Cover the area thoroughly
- 02Lay base coat in thin, uniform layers
- 03Put the knife back in a knife roll, magnetic stand or block — never loose in a drawer.
§5 — Finish and inspection
- 01Remove any small impurities and polish to even gloss
- 02Check transition in good light from multiple angles
- 03Check that shine and colour match the surrounding paint
