Tip-over limit on sloping ground

How steep can the substrate be before the vehicle tips over sideways?

Answer: A vehicle tips to the side when the perpendicular from the centre of gravity falls outside the wheels on the low side. The boundary depends on the ratio of track width to centre of gravity height, the static stability factor SSF. The calculator converts this to the lateral slope in per cent where the vehicle is on the edge of tipping, and compares with the slope on site. Used before you tow or right a vehicle on a slope or in a ditch.

Formula

SSF = T ÷ (2 × H), hvor T er sporvidden og H tyngdepunktets højde

SSF is also the lateral acceleration in g where a rigid vehicle tips on level road (NHTSA's rollover classification)

Validity and source

Statisk stabilitetsfaktor SSF = T / (2 · H) (NHTSA)

Does not apply when

  • Static and simplified: suspension, tyres compressed, load shifting, soft ground and a jerk in the wire cause the vehicle to tip at a smaller slope. Keep a good margin and know the centre of gravity for a loaded truck if you can.

Step by step

  4. Hold en god margin. Fjedring, last og ryk i wiren flytter grænsen ned.

Typical errors

Last højt oppe sænker grænsen meget.

Examples from everyday life

Track width (centre wheel to centre wheel)
1.55 m
Centre of gravity height above the road
0.55 m
Lateral slope at site
30 %

Track width (centre wheel to centre wheel)
2 m
Centre of gravity height above the road
1.8 m
Lateral slope at site
35 %

Rule of thumb

How to check the answer

SSF over 1 betyder, at køretøjet først vælter på en hældning over 45°. For lastbiler og busser ligger SSF typisk under 1.
