§Listen before you lift the bonnet
The best troubleshooting starts before you touch the car. The customer usually already has lots of information you can use: when did it go wrong, what did they hear or see, did it smell of anything, and has the car behaved strangely recently? Ask specifically: 'Did a light come on the dashboard?', 'Did it make a noise when you turned the key?', 'Has it run fine until now?'. The customer's answers often narrow down the problem long before you've found your tools, and that saves time in a place where time is often synonymous with safety.
§The quick check: power, ignition and fuel
Most breakdowns on the road are caused by a handful of reasons: dead battery poor connection in a plug or clamp empty fuel a blown fuse or a simple mechanical problem like a puncture. Therefore an experienced roadside assistant always starts with the likely and cheap before digging into the rare and complicated. A systematic check of power supply ignition and fuel system solves a large proportion of tasks without the car needing to be touched further.

§The error code reader — a compass, not an answer
Modern cars are filled with electronics and an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) device has become one of the most important tools in the field. The common diagnostic socket and a set of standardized error codes (EOBD) have been mandatory on new cars and vans sold in the EU since the early 2000s and allow you to read which system the car's computer has registered a discrepancy in — engine, brakes, airbag or other. But an error code is rarely the whole story.
§Assess: fix it here or transport it
When you have an image of the fault you must make a decision: can you fix it responsibly on the spot or must the vehicle be transported to a workshop? Some faults — flat battery a puncture a loose terminal — you can fix immediately. Others — a faulty control unit mechanical engine damage or a fault you can't identify with certainty — you shouldn't guess about. Recommending transport over uncertain repair isn't defeat it's professional responsibility.
