Masking via air conduction: should masking be applied, and with what

Should I mask at 1 kHz and at what level do I start?

Answer: Sound in one earphone can reach the other ear through the skull. Overhearing attenuation is approx. 40 dB for supra- and circumaural earphones and approx. 55 dB for earplugs. If the difference between the test ear's air conduction and the other ear's best threshold (bone conduction or air conduction if bone conduction was not measured) is at least that large it might be the good ear responding and then it must be masked (BSA's rule 1 and 3). The calculator shows if masking is needed and what level you start with in the non-test ear: its air conduction + 10 dB.

Formula

Rule 1: mask when the two ears' unmasked air conduction is at least 40 dB apart (55 dB with insert earphone)

Rule 3: mask when the test ear's air conduction is at least 40 dB (55 dB) worse than the other ear's bone conduction

Validity and source

Does not apply when

  • Rule 2 (bone conduction) is not included here. Bone conduction has almost no cross-hearing attenuation so it must almost always be masked. Plateau method and risk of over-masking at large conductive loss you assess per clinic procedure and with the audiologist.

Step by step

Examples from everyday life

Air conduction on test ear (unmasked)
70 dB HL
Air conduction on the other ear (non-test ear)
15 dB HL
Leg line (unmasked, non-test earmuff). Not measured: set it equal to the air line
10 dB HL
Headphones (overhearing attenuation)
Supra or circumaural — 40 dB

Air conduction on test ear (unmasked)
70 dB HL
Air conduction on the other ear (non-test ear)
15 dB HL
Leg line (unmasked, non-test earmuff). Not measured: set it equal to the air line
10 dB HL
Headphones (overhearing attenuation)
Socket telephone (insert) — 55 dB

Air conduction on test ear (unmasked)
45 dB HL
Air conduction on the other ear (non-test ear)
20 dB HL
Leg line (unmasked, non-test earmuff). Not measured: set it equal to the air line
15 dB HL
Headphones (overhearing attenuation)
Supra or circumaural — 40 dB

It means: Afstanden er -10 dB.

Rule of thumb

How to check the answer
