Evoked potentials: number of averages and recording time

How many sweeps and how long should I use for an ABR?

Answer: An evoked potential is much smaller than the background noise from EEG and muscles. That's why you average many sweeps: the response is the same each time, while random noise falls with the square root of the number. To get the noise down to a tenth, you need to use 100 times as many sweeps. The calculator finds the number of sweeps to the residual noise you want to get down to, and how long the recording takes at your stimulation rate.

Formula

Reststøj = støj i én sweep ÷ √N

N (sweeps) = (støj i én sweep ÷ ønsket reststøj)², rundet op

Optagetid (s) = N ÷ stimulationsrate

Eksempel: (5 µV ÷ 0,1 µV)² = 2.500 sweeps. Ved 21,1 stimuli/s tager det ca. 118 sekunder

Validity and source

Source
Signalmidling: reststøj = støj i én sweep ÷ √N (grundprincippet bag ABR, VEP og SEP)

Does not apply when

  • The rule applies random noise. Muscle tension 50 Hz hum and stimulus artefacts are not random and don't disappear with more averaging. Rejected sweeps lengthen time. Repeat curve to show it's reproducible and follow the clinic's protocol for number of sweeps filters and rate at each test type.

Step by step

Typical errors

  • At glemme afviste sweeps.

Examples from everyday life

Noise in one single sweep (after filtering)
5 µV
Residual noise you want to achieve
0.1 µV
Stimulation rate
21.1 stimuli/s

It means: Du skal bruge 2,500 sweeps, og optagelsen tager ca. 118 s. Med en gentaget kurve er det 3.9 min.

VEP med mønsterskift

Ved et VEP er svaret større. Støjen i én sweep er ca. 10 µV, og du vil ned på 1 µV ved 2 stimuli/s.

Noise in one single sweep (after filtering)
10 µV
Residual noise you want to achieve
1 µV
Stimulation rate
2 stimuli/s

Noise in one single sweep (after filtering)
4 µV
Residual noise you want to achieve
0.2 µV
Stimulation rate
4.7 stimuli/s

Rule of thumb

How to check the answer
