Checklist: Safe excavation

Before you dig, and before anyone goes down

§Before you dig

  • 01Find out if there are cables and wires in the ground.
  • 02Mark and cordon off the work area.
  • 03Assess soil and depth – what does the task require?

§Securing the excavation

  • 01Brace deep excavations or establish safe slopes.
  • 02Keep soil, materials and machinery away from the edge.
  • 03Make multiple sketches/directions instead of locking onto the first idea.

§Before anyone goes down

  • 01Check room visually for overlooked areas
  • 02Check that no machines are working right at the edge
  • 03Be aware of water that can weaken the soil.
