Asphalt: tonnes, layer thickness and loads

How many tonnes of asphalt should I order, and how thick will the layer be?

Answer: In descriptions and offers, the asphalt is listed as a laying quantity in kg/m², e.g. 100 kg/m² GAB or 80 kg/m² AB. The calculator converts tonnes to area with a small allowance for waste and adjustment, the finished layer thickness with the asphalt's compressed density and how many loads it becomes. The density is in the recipe or the supplier's datasheet.

Formula

Tons = areal × kg/m² ÷ 1000 × (1 + tillæg ÷ 100)

Tykkelse (mm) = kg/m² ÷ densitet (t/m³). 1 t/m³ = 1 kg pr. m² pr. mm

Læs = oprund(tons ÷ tons pr. læs)

Rule of thumb: with a density of 2.35 t/m³, 1 cm asphalt equals approximately 23.5 kg/m²

Validity and source

Source
Application in kg/m² (project/building regulations) + density from asphalt recipe

Does not apply when

  • Fresh asphalt, not yet compressed, takes up more space than the finished thickness. The levelling must therefore have the height that the layer and roller require. Asphalt in the order is always in tonnes, never m³.

Sådan bruger du den

Asfalt bestilles i ton ud fra en udlægningsmængde i kg/m². Beregneren regner ton, lagtykkelse og læs.

Step by step

  1. Mål arealet.
  2. Skriv kg/m² fra beskrivelsen.
  3. Skriv densiteten fra recepten.
  4. Læs ton og læs.

Typical errors

  • At bestille i m³.
  • At glemme tillægget.
  • At udlægge asfalt i kulde.

Examples from everyday life

Indkørsel med GAB

En indkørsel på 250 m² skal have 100 kg/m².

Area
250 m²
Application quantity (description)
100 kg/m²
Compressed density (recipe)
2.35 t/m³
Allowance for spillage and fitting
3 %
Tons per load
16 h

It means: Bestil 25.8 h, altså 2 read. Laget bliver 43 mm tykt.

Parkeringsplads med slidlag

En parkeringsplads på 1.450 m² skal have 80 kg/m² slidlag.

Area
1,450 m²
Application quantity (description)
80 kg/m²
Compressed density (recipe)
2.4 t/m³
Allowance for spillage and fitting
3 %
Tons per load
25 h

It means: Bestil 119.5 h i 5 read. Laget bliver 33 mm.

Rule of thumb

1 cm asfalt er ca. 23,5 kg/m².

How to check the answer

Areal gange kg/m² delt med 1000: 250 × 100 ÷ 1000 = 25 ton.
