Checklist: troubleshooting welding seam

Find the cause when the seam is not good

§What do you see?

  • 01Are there pores on or in the seam?
  • 02Is there burning along the edges?
  • 03Is there missing penetration in the root?
  • 04Is slag caught in the seam?

§Check preparation

  • 01Were the joint surfaces clean of rust, paint, fat and moisture?
  • 02Was the joint preparation and root gap correct?
  • 03Was the workpiece protected against draughts that could blow away the shielding gas?

§Check setting and technique

  • 01Were current and possibly wire speed appropriate for the material and material thickness?
  • 02Were the shielding gas and polarity correct for the method?
  • 03Were speed, angle and distance stable?
  • 04Was slag removed between the strands where necessary?
