Most welders work at a workshop a building site or in a production hall. A small group specializes in something completely different: welding underwater typically in connection with maintenance of oil and gas platforms wind turbines pipelines and other offshore equipment. This is work that places demands far beyond what a regular welding qualification covers.

Underwater welding requires a combination of welding expertise and a valid commercial diving certificate. In other words you must both be able to weld and be trained and certified as a commercial diver typically for surface-supplied diving before you can take the specialized training in underwater welding and forging. The course teaches participants to plan and perform underwater welding cutting and high-pressure jetting with correct use of the special equipment the work requires.

§What the work involves

Underwater welding is used among other things for repair and maintenance of metal parts on offshore installations—pipelines drilling equipment and the platform structures themselves. The work takes place under conditions that are markedly different from on land: limited visibility current pressure and an entirely different logistics around equipment and safety. This sets demands on both technical welding skill and the ability to work calmly and systematically under difficult conditions.

The specialized and demanding nature of underwater welding is typically reflected in the pay level which is above ordinary welding work on land. In return the way there is long and requires investment in two separate educational directions and the work is physically and mentally demanding with a risk profile that is markedly different from ordinary workshop work.
