Checklist: before lifting

The points that are reviewed before a crane lift begins

§The load

  • 01The weight is known and is within the crane's capacity in the current setup
  • 02The centre of gravity is assessed and lifting points are placed accordingly
  • 03The load is loose from the surface — nothing is fixed

§The equipment

  • 01Rigging equipment is inspected and undamaged
  • 02The equipment's work load matches the load and suspension angle
  • 03Edge protection is placed where the strap lies over sharp edges

§Crane and positioning

  • 01Daily inspection has been carried out and operation brakes and emergency stop work
  • 02Mobile cranes: the ground bears, outriggers are out and braced, the crane is level
  • 03The load diagram for the current setup is read

§Area and communication

  • 01No persons under or in the load's movement path
  • 02Swing and running track are clear, and the hazard zone is cordoned off as needed
  • 03Signals between slingers and crane operators are agreed, and only one directs
