Disposal criteria for use in inspection of lifting equipment

§Steel wire — discarded at

Control point	Discarded if
Wire break	Number of visible breaks over the limit within a given wire length
Diameter	Outer diameter is noticeably reduced compared to original
Shape	Bird's nest effect, kink, pinching or flayed ends
Corrosion / heat	Visible wear of wires, or signs of heat exposure

Control point	Discarded if
Extension	Measured length exceeding the limit manufacturer specifies (elongation)
Led	Deformed steel has lost load-bearing capacity, even when it looks straight after straightening. The standard's principle is replacement, not straightening.
Heat exposure	Discolouration or other signs that the chain has been exposed to high heat
Wear	Severe wear on the joint contact surfaces
