How you explain risk to a patient
One of the first things that happens when you want to start preparatory adult education is finding out which level suits you. This scares some — the word 'test' reminds of old school memories. But the purpose is the opposite of sorting people out: it's to ensure that the teaching hits right where you are, so it's neither too difficult nor too easy.
§Admission interview and advisory test
The course typically starts with a conversation with an instructor or mentor and a short, indicative test of reading or maths. The test is non-binding and cannot be failed. It gives a picture of what you can already and what is difficult so you can be placed at the right level. It is a good idea to be open about what is tricky — that way the placement will be right.
§The trades: reading and mathematics
FVU is divided into subject areas. FVU-reading is about reading, spelling and expressing yourself in writing in Danish. FVU-mathematics is about everyday numbers and calculations. You can take one subject at a time or multiple simultaneously, depending on need and capacity. It is quite common to be strong in one subject and need the other.
§Teaching in steps.
Each subject area is built up in steps that gradually become more demanding. You start at the step that fits, and move on as skills grow. The steps make progress visible and manageable: you can see where you started and feel that you are moving — instead of facing a big, undefined goal.

Tests are voluntary tools, not obstacles
You can complete a step with an exam and get a certificate, but it is not a requirement to benefit from the teaching. For some, a certificate is important — for example as documentation for further education. For others, what matters most is concrete progress in everyday life. Both are valid reasons to be there.
§When a trade is not the right one
Sometimes the conversation and test shows that adult education is not the right offer right now – for example if the difficulties rather point to dyslexia or a need for Danish lessons. Then you advise on other options. It is not a rejection, but help to find the offer that actually fits.
Admission to FVU is built to meet people where they are. The one who dares to be honest about what is difficult gets the best placement — and thus the greatest benefit from teaching.
