How the contract affects what the apprentice can be asked to do
There is already a general understanding that you 'test your level' before starting FVU. But what does that word actually cover in practice? The admission process is actually quite systematically described by the Ministry of Children and Education and varies depending on which of FVU's subject areas you apply to.
§Who conducts the assessment?
It is the educational institutions – the FVU providers – that carry out target group assessment, screening and level placement. For the mandatory tests, a test supervisor must be present, who administers the process and ensures that it takes place uniformly and fairly for all applicants.
§FVU-Danish and FVU-mathematics: conversation and computer-based test
For FVU-Danish and FVU-Mathematics the programme starts with an introductory conversation based on a fixed interview guide. The applicant then takes a mandatory computer-based test: VLV-2 for reading and VMAT-2 for mathematics. These two tests are specifically developed tools that assess the applicant's basic skills before final admission and course placement takes place.

§FVU-start, FVU-digital and FVU-English: conversation instead of test
For the three newer subject areas – FVU-start FVU-digital and FVU-English — admission is not via a computer-based test but via a mandatory conversation based on a structured conversation guide. The interview covers both linguistic or digital prerequisites and motivation to participate. For FVU-start the interview is also legally required and specifically developed to clarify language requirements and assess whether the applicant has the necessary Danish language skills for this offer.
§Why thorough preparation makes sense
It may seem like a lot of bureaucracy for something that in the end 'just' places a person at a level. But precisely because FVU classes often contain participants with very different backgrounds, precise and systematic assessment is crucial so that no one either bores themselves on a class that's too easy or drowns in one that's too hard. The structured approach is therefore not an obstacle – it's the very prerequisite for subsequent teaching to be tailored to the individual.
The best advice for the one going through a target group assessment screening or step placement is therefore the same regardless of subject area: be honest about what is difficult and what you already know. The more precise picture the test or conversation paints the better the education you subsequently are offered.
