When numbers are troublesome—and how to develop a confident relationship with math

Numbers are everywhere in everyday life: when we shop, pay bills, measure, calculate time, or set a budget. For some it comes easily, while others get palpitations at the sight of a calculation. A strained relationship with numbers is widespread — and it can change, no matter how difficult it feels today.

§What numeracy skills does everyday life require?

It is rarely advanced mathematics that everyday life requires. It is being able to grasp amounts and understand what they mean, to make a quick estimate, to understand percentages with discounts and interest, and to be able to measure and convert in practical situations. These are skills that make one confident with money and practical choices — not something that belongs only to the classroom.

§What is dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia, also called dyskalkuli, is a specific difficulty with numbers and number understanding — much like dyslexia is a difficulty with written language. A person with dyscalculia may have difficulty perceiving the size of numbers, remembering number facts, and keeping track of sequences. Like dyslexia, it has nothing to do with intelligence.

§Build it up step by step

The path to a more secure relationship with numbers goes through small, manageable steps and lots of recognizable everyday examples. It helps to tie the math to something concrete — money, recipes, measurements — rather than abstract numbers on a piece of paper. And it helps to use rough estimates as a safety net, so you can feel whether an answer is reasonable at all.

§Assistive devices are not cheating

Using a calculator, spreadsheet or app is not cheating — it is using the tools everyone uses. What matters is understanding what you are calculating and being able to judge whether the answer makes sense. A person who understands the numbers well enough to catch a typo with a rough estimate often calculates more reliably than one who simply trusts the machine blindly.

§Get it checked if it bothers you a lot

If maths has caused great difficulties all your life, it may be worth talking to a counsellor about it. Sometimes FVU maths is the answer; other times it points to a need for more specialist help. In any case, the first step is to put it into words — and to know that you are not alone in finding numbers difficult.

Comfort with numbers is not something you either have or do not have. It can be trained at all ages and for most people it is less about talent than about meeting the figures at the right pace and tied to the life you actually live.
