FVU-start: oral Danish for bilingual adults

Not everyone who would like to benefit from FVU has enough Danish to start directly on FVU-Danish or FVU-mathematics. For this group there is FVU-start – a subject area that differs from other FVU subjects by being purely oral.

§What is FVU-start?

FVU-start is an oral offering to bilingual applicants who know some Danish, but not yet sufficient to fully benefit from FVU's other subjects or from vocational education (AMU). Instead of reading and writing, you work at FVU-start with speaking, listening and communicating orally — as a preparation for what comes next.

§What is the purpose?

The purpose of FVU start is to bring participants' oral skills to a level where they can be expected to benefit from participating in other FVU subjects or in labour market training. It is therefore intended as a springboard not a goal in itself — though for the individual it can be an important milestone to be able to manage oneself orally in more everyday situations.

§Admission: a legally required conversation

Admission to FVU start differs from the subject areas that use computer-based tests. Instead a mandatory conversation with the applicant is conducted. For this purpose, the Agency for Education and Quality has developed a required conversation guide that clarifies language requirements and determines whether the applicant has the necessary Danish language skills to be admitted to FVU start.

§Why a purely oral trade makes sense

For some bilingual adults the oral part of the language is what is most missing — perhaps because they have learned some writing but had limited opportunity to speak Danish in everyday life. For others it is the opposite. FVU-start hits precisely the group where focused oral effort makes most sense before diving into reading writing or academic subjects in a language that still feels uncertain to speak.

FVU-start is thus a concrete example of how FVU has continuously developed to meet new target groups — not by reworking the classic subjects, but by adding a new, more tailored step in front of those who need it most.
