FVU at the workplace: company-based teaching

For many adults the biggest step towards FVU is not the academic but meeting at a brand new school among strangers after a long working day. Precisely because of this company-based FVU exists where teaching instead comes to the workplace — in rooms the employee already knows together with colleagues in the same situation.

Company-based teaching means that an adult basic education provider — typically an adult education center or a vocational school — plans and conducts a whole or partial adult basic education group directly at the workplace itself. Teaching can take place during working hours outside working hours or as a combination all depending on the agreement between company and provider.

Companies can order adult basic education groups within IT (digital adult basic education) English Danish and mathematics. A teacher first tests the participants' level and then arranges the teaching based on the result — typically in courses of about 20-30 teaching hours of 60 minutes per level. This makes it possible to plan a course that fits the company's operations without dragging unnecessarily.

For the company it is first and foremost about getting employees who can navigate digital systems better understand written instructions and communicate in English with customers or colleagues. This reduces errors facilitates training of new routines and makes it easier to introduce new technology because employees are better equipped to use it.

For the employee the familiar framework can lower the threshold significantly. It is often easier to join a group with colleagues you know than to show up alone at a school. At the same time there is a direct noticeable connection between what you learn and the concrete tasks you solve in everyday life — which makes motivation easier to maintain.

Company-based adult basic education is a good example that basic adult education does not have to take place at a distance from working life. When school comes to employees the leap from thought to action becomes significantly shorter — and it is often precisely that which determines whether a good initiative becomes reality.
