Process template: Suspected stroke (STroke check)
Recognize quickly and call 1-1-2 — time is brain
§Check three signs
- 01Face: ask the person to smile – is one corner of the mouth hanging?
- 02Arms: ask the person to raise both arms — does one drop?
- 03Speech: ask the person to say a sentence — is the speech slurred or incorrect?
§If even one sign is present
- 01Call 1-1-2 immediately and say you suspect a stroke
- 02Note when symptoms began – important for treatment
- 03Keep the person calm and in a comfortable position
- 04Don't give food or drink — swallowing ability may be impaired
§While you wait
- 01Stay with the person and monitor consciousness and breathing
- 02Unconscious but breathing normally: recovery position
- 03Stops normal breathing: treat as cardiac arrest
- 04Collect information about known illnesses and medication for the ambulance
