Process template: First aid for burns
Cool first — and avoid the typical mistakes
§Stop the impact
- 01Remove the person from the heat source or remove the heat source
- 02Switch off fire in clothes by smothering it, e.g. with a blanket
- 03Rinse chemicals off skin with plenty of water and follow the safety data sheet
§Cool the burn
- 01Cool with tempered, running water for a long time
- 02Remove rings watches and tight clothing from the area before it swells
- 03Let clothing stuck to the wound stay in place
§Protect and assess
- 01Loosely cover if needed with a clean, lint-free bandage after cooling.
- 02Never prick a blister and don't apply anything to the wound
- 03Keep an eye on signs of shock from major burns
- 04Seek help with large burns, face/hands/feet, children and elderly
