Checklist: before, during, and after an ambulance shift

A fixed routine that keeps you sharp through the shift

When the pace is high, it's routine that carries you. A fixed checklist means you don't have to remember everything in your head in a stressful situation—the system remembers for you. Adjust the list to your workplace's guidelines.

§Before the shift — preparation

  • 01Check vehicle: fuel, lights, tires, and emergency equipment
  • 02Check pattern alignment at each new pass
  • 03Check expiration dates and stock of consumables
  • 04Clarify with your partner who does what.

§Under emergency call.

  • 01Assess the safety of the injury site before you enter.
  • 02Create overview: what happened and how many are affected?
  • 03Follow the treatment guide and document as you go.
  • 04Report clearly to the hospital about the patient's condition.

§After call-out – ready for next

  • 01Clean and disinfect vehicle and equipment.
  • 02Refill what has been used so the ambulance is ready again.
  • 03Complete the documentation while it is fresh in memory.
  • 04Talk with your partner if the effort was psychologically stressful.
