How school and practical work work together throughout the programme
The path to becoming an ambulance technician is structured as an alternating program: you alternate between school and working in a company until you hold both a journeyman exam and authorization. This gives you both the theoretical foundation and the practical routine you'll need when you later meet the sick and injured in the real world.
§Basic course 1 and 2
If you come more or less directly from 9th or 10th grade, you typically start on the basic course at a vocational school. This is where you get the broad subject foundation and are ready to move on. The length of the basic course depends on your background – if you have reached 25 years of age or have work experience, you can instead follow an adult course where your previous knowledge is assessed and parts of the course can be shortened.
The point of the basic course is that you must be able to do the basics and be clear about the trade before you commit to an employer in the main course.
§Main course – alternation between school and practical work
The main course is the long and heavy part. It alternates between school periods, where you are in the classroom, and practical periods, where you are out driving an ambulance for your employer. You spend most of your time in practical work – that's where the real learning happens, out on the road.

§Entry requirements and admission
To enter you must in principle have completed 9th or 10th grade with at least 2.0 on average in both Danish and mathematics – or something equivalent. If you apply without an agreement in place, the application is made via optagelse.dk.
Beyond the formal requirements, employers often set their own. These can be an age limit, driving licence requirements, a clean criminal record and good physical fitness because the work is physically demanding. Always check the individual employer's requirements before applying.
§The journeyman's exam
The course is rounded off with a journeyman's exam that typically consists of both a theoretical and a practical part. When it is passed you can work as an ambulance technician – and you also have the foundation to later build towards paramedic.
