Further and continuing education on top of the trade

One of the good things about becoming a paramedic is that the education is not a dead end. It's a solid professional foundation you can build on in many directions – both within the prehospital field and more broadly in the healthcare system.

§The way towards paramedic

The most logical next step is paramedic. The paramedic has more competencies and can perform more advanced treatment than the ambulance technician. To move forward this way you typically need to have worked as an ambulance technician for a period and built practical experience before you can take the further education.

§A springboard to other health educations

Experience and professional ballast from ambulance work is gold if you later want to take a different path in the health service. Some choose to study further to become for example a nurse, while others focus on acute care in hospitals. Your practical experience with sick and injured people gives you a head start.

§Courses and ongoing upskilling

Even if you stay in the job as an ambulance worker training never stops. You must regularly take courses and refresh your skills because treatment guidelines equipment and guidelines change. It is a fixed part of being a healthcare professional.

§Take good habits from the start

If you want to go further, then start thinking about it already as a student. Be curious, document your experience and ask your experienced colleagues how they moved forward. The one who builds good professional habits early has the best cards in hand when opportunities for further education arise.
