As an ambulance attendant you are part of a profession that has evolved dramatically. Where ambulances once mostly transported the sick from A to B, you are now trained to treat the patient at the scene and during transport. That development has saved countless lives.
§When the ambulance was just transport
Initially an ambulance in practice was a fast vehicle that could drive the sick or injured person to the hospital. There was limited equipment and limited treatment along the way. The principle was simple: get to the doctor quickly.
§Treatment moves out to the patient
Over time, it was understood that much is decided in the first minutes. Therefore, treatment was moved to the patient: oxygen, defibrillator, pain relief and securing breathing could now be started immediately. This required better-trained personnel and more equipment in the ambulance.
§The modern pre-hospital system
Today the ambulance service is part of an entire pre-hospital system with an emergency dispatch centre emergency doctors paramedics and cooperation with hospitals. You work according to fixed treatment guidelines and your work is closely tied to the rest of the healthcare system.
