Why “By”?
The cadastral districts (ejerlav) are the units the land was surveyed into, and many of them are the villages. “Tulstrup By, Ikast” is the village of Tulstrup in Ikast parish. That is why the same name appears in several places: the cadastre also has “Tulstrup By” in Alsønderup, Græsted and Tulstrup.

Cadastral district instead of address
A plot is found by cadastral district and parcel number, e.g. parcel no. 92 Jelling By, Jelling. That way you can talk about a plot without using anyone's address.
