How it came about

Watchmaker

Start at the oldest stop and work forwards. Each stop is a little workshop: there is something to do, and one thing to take away.

The dates are not made up. Under each stop you can unfold the source and see where the date is written.

  1. Stop 1 of 61491

The first watchmaker in a Danish town

    Aarhus

    Here is what you do

    1. Tie a weight to a cord and let it turn a wheel
    2. Add a brake so the wheel can only turn a little at a time
    3. Count how many times the brake releases in one minute

    What to take away

A mechanical clock is not an engine — it is a BRAKE. The weight wants to drop all the way at once; the whole art is to release it a little at a time, always by the same amount.

  2. Stop 2 of 61755

The watchmakers get a guild of their own

    Copenhagen

    Here is what you do

    1. Write a list of what someone must be able to do before calling themselves a watchmaker
    2. Let someone else try to live up to the list
    3. Rewrite the items on the list that turned out to be impossible to measure

    What to take away

Before the guild, watchmakers belonged under the smiths. A trade becomes its own on the day it decides for itself what you have to be able to do — not on the day the work changes.

Word for word from the source

«Et sådant blev oprettet i København i 1755 som det eneste i Danmark, Norge og hertugdømmet Slesvig.»

  3. Stop 3 of 6ca. 1850

    The factory makes the watches

A watch workshop working from bought-in parts

    Here is what you do

    1. Take two identical watches apart and swap the parts between them
    2. Find the part that could NOT be swapped
    3. Write down what you can now repair without making anything yourself

    What to take away

Once the parts became identical, the watchmaker stopped MAKING watches and began repairing them. The trade did not change its name — but almost all of its content was replaced.

    How do we know?

Word for word from the source

«Urmager er en håndværker, der tidligere selv fremstillede ure, men som fra ca. 1850, da urproduktionen blev industrialiseret, især forhandler og reparerer ure.»

  4. Stop 4 of 61857

    The guild loses its power

    Denmark

    Here is what you do

    1. Find out who is now allowed to open a watchmaker's shop
    2. Write down the three things a customer can no longer know about the craftsman
    3. Suggest something that could take the place of the guild's guarantee

    What to take away

When the guild lost its power, its guarantee that a master COULD actually do the work disappeared with it. That gap is the reason for everything that came afterwards: associations, schools and journeyman's certificates.

    How do we know?

Word for word from the source

«Med Næringsloven af 1857 bortfaldt urmagerlavets faglige betydning.»

  5. Stop 5 of 61889

The school takes over the training

    The Danish School of Watchmaking

    Here is what you do

    1. Teach someone one particular technique without touching the tool yourself
    2. Write the technique down as steps, and let a third person follow your steps
    3. Rewrite the steps that turned out to be unclear

    What to take away

A school can train many people at once — but only if the craft can be WRITTEN DOWN. That is what an occupational description is: a technique, made possible to pass on.

    How do we know?

Word for word from the source

«I stedet opstod Urmagerforeningen af 7. april 1875, som i 1889 tog initiativet til oprettelsen af Den Danske Urmagerskole.»

  6. Stop 6 of 6today

The bench with tweezers and loupe

    A watchmaker's bench with a dust-free tray

    Here is what you do

    1. Lay the parts down in exactly the order you removed them
    2. Work with loupe and tweezers so your fingers never touch the movement itself
    3. Clean and oil precisely where metal slides against metal
    4. Start the watch and measure how many seconds it loses over a day and a night

    What to take away

A fault in a watch is rarely a broken part — it is dirt and the wrong lubrication. That is why order and cleanliness ARE the craft, not merely preparation for it.
