How it came about

Start at the oldest stop and work forwards. Each stop is a little workshop: there is something to do, and one thing to take away.
The dates are not made up. Under each stop you can unfold the source and see where the date is written.

The forest is placed under protection
Denmark
Here is what you do
- Draw a piece of woodland and put a fence around it
- Take the cattle out of the drawing and leave the pigs in
- After a year, look at what has grown up where the animals could not reach
What to take away
The forest did not vanish to axes but to MOUTHS: animals that ate the young trees before they could grow. Protected forest is therefore first of all a fence — and a promise that the land will remain forest.

Forest on the heath
The Jutland heath
Here is what you do
- Dig a hole in the sand and find out how deep the water table lies
- Plant one small tree sheltered by a larger one and another completely in the open
- After a year, measure which of the two grew best
What to take away
On heathland you cannot simply plant. The soil must first be able to hold water, and the young trees need shelter. That is why conifers come first — not because they are the finest, but because they can manage on their own.

Beech is still the biggest
The forests of Denmark
Here is what you do
- Count the tree species in a small patch of forest and list them
- Note beside each species what it can be used for
- Guess which species would win if price alone decided
What to take away
What grows in a Danish forest is a CHOICE — not nature. Even while conifers were advancing, beech remained the most widespread species, because it was the one being used.

The storm that flattened the forest
Denmark, 17 October
Here is what you do
- Push sticks into dry soil and into wet soil, and press on them with the same force
- Try again with and without leaves fixed to the top
- Write down what it took before the stick toppled instead of bending
What to take away
A tree falls when the root lets go — not when the trunk snaps. That is why soft ground and leaves still on the branches are more dangerous to a forest than the wind speed itself.

«Men da det d. 17. oktober 1967 blæste op til en voldsom storm på et tidspunkt, hvor jorden var opblødt af regn, og før løvtræerne havde smidt deres blade, gik det lige hårdt ud over løv- og nåletræer.»

The forest has to do more than supply timber
A Danish forest with a management plan
Here is what you do
- Write down three things the same forest has to deliver at once
- Find the places where two of the three get in each other's way
- Point out a place in the forest where the trees should be left standing
What to take away
When the goal became "sustainable forestry", the forest stopped being merely a field with trees on it. Timber, nature and public access have to be delivered at the same time — and the three do not always pull in the same direction.

Chainsaw, plan and escape route
A forest, with a work plan in your pocket
Here is what you do
- Clear an escape route diagonally backwards before the chainsaw is started
- Cut the notch so the tree falls exactly where you decided it should
- Measure the trunk and write down what this particular one is to be used for
- Plant anew where you have felled, and mark what you have planted
What to take away
The felling itself takes a minute; the plan takes a day. What makes the work safe is not the saw — it is that the direction of fall and the escape route were decided before it was started.
