How it came about

Graphic technician

Start at the oldest stop and work forwards. Each stop is a little workshop: there is something to do, and one thing to take away.

The dates are not made up. Under each stop you can unfold the source and see where the date is written.

  1. Stop 1 of 6ca. 1050

    Letters you can move around

    China

    Here is what you do

    1. Cut out ten letters, one at a time
    2. Assemble them into a word and print it
    3. Assemble the same ten letters into a completely different word

    What to take away

The difference between carving a whole page and carving a single letter is that the letter can be used again. The REUSE is the entire invention.

Word for word from the source

«Trykning fra frit kombinerbare enkelttyper af brændt ler er antagelig også en kinesisk opfindelse, der kan dateres til ca. 1050.»

  2. Stop 2 of 6ca. 1454

    The Bible that was printed

    Mainz

    Here is what you do

    1. Cast ten identical letters in the same mould
    2. Check them by measurement — they must be exactly the same height
    3. Lock them into a frame and print, then find the letter that sits too low

    What to take away

Every piece of type must be EXACTLY the same height, or some letters never reach the paper. Printing is first and foremost precision work in metal.

    How do we know?

Word for word from the source

«Den ældste bevarede og datérbare europæiske bog, der er trykt med løse typer, er Johann Gutenbergs Bibel fra ca. 1454»

  3. Stop 3 of 61482

    Printing arrives in Denmark

    The bishopric of Funen

    Here is what you do

    1. Set a line using mirror-image letters
    2. Print it and see what came out the right way round
    3. Find the letters that are easy to mix up — such as b and d

    What to take away

Everything in a hot-metal composing room is MIRRORED. The compositor has to read backwards as fast as forwards — and that is why b, d, p and q are the trade's classic trap.

    How do we know?

Word for word from the source

«I Danmark indførtes bogtrykket i 1482, da Fyns biskop Carl Rønnow (ca. 1445-1501) indforskrev den omrejsende tyske bogtrykker Johann Snell»

  4. Stop 4 of 61886

The machine that casts whole lines

    New York

    Here is what you do

    1. Set one line of text with loose type and time yourself
    2. Type the same line on a keyboard instead
    3. Count how many separate movements each of the two methods cost

    What to take away

The Linotype casts a whole line as one slug of lead. The compositor no longer touches the individual letters — he types them, and that is where the trade becomes machine operation.

    How do we know?

Word for word from the source

«I 1886 opfandt den tyskfødte amerikaner Ottmar Mergenthaler i New York den geniale Linotype-maskine til både støbning og sætning af hele satslinjer.»

  5. Stop 5 of 6slutningen af 1960'erne

    Lead disappears from the trade

    A Danish printing house

    Here is what you do

    1. Draw on a completely flat plate where only some areas are meant to take ink
    2. Roll ink over it and see where it stays and where the water pushes it off
    3. Transfer the ink to a rubber blanket, and from there on to the paper

    What to take away

In offset the printing surface is COMPLETELY FLAT — it is grease and water, not height, that decides where the ink settles. That is how hot-metal type could disappear from the trade altogether.

    How do we know?

Word for word from the source

«i slutningen af 1960'erne begyndte den generelle overgang fra bogtryk til offset»

  6. Stop 6 of 6today

From file to finished print run

A press hall with a press already running

    Here is what you do

    1. Check the file's colours and trim marks before anything at all is run
    2. Run a proof and hold it up against what was agreed
    3. Adjust the ink feed while the machine is running
    4. Trim the run and check that the count is right

    What to take away

A mistake does not cost one sheet, it costs the whole run. That is why a print technician's work lies in the checks made BEFORE the machine runs — not in fixing things afterwards.
