Which of the two came first?
They are from different trades. One of them is always the older one.
Why is it difficult?
The trades share the same history
You cannot answer by thinking about one trade at a time. The wheel, fire, electricity and the engine entered every trade, just at different times — and that is what you start to sense once you have put enough of them side by side.
And a year is not just a number
Once you have answered, you are shown where the year comes from — often with the sentence written in the source, and always with a link. That is the difference between something somebody claims and something you can go and check yourself.
