The industry today — where you will work

Workplaces job opportunities and future of the trade

The receptionist profession extends far beyond the classical hotel desk. When you are qualified, you have competencies in service, communication, coordination and IT systems that are in demand in many different types of workplaces. Here we look at where you can end up and what characterises the industry's future.

§Classical workplaces

The most obvious workplace is the hotel, where you receive guests, handle bookings, check-ins and check-outs and help with questions during their stay. But reception skills are also used at conference centres, training facilities, holiday centres and cruise ships — anywhere guests need to be received and guided.

§Related roles outside the hotel

Many companies clinics and offices have a reception that is the face outward. Here the receptionist's competencies overlap with roles within customer service front office and administration. The ability to receive communicate clearly in multiple languages and keep track of systems is valuable in many contexts.

§Demand and employment.

The hotel and experience industry is part of tourism, and demand follows to some extent the season and the economy. It is busy in high season and at large events, while low season can be quieter. In general, the industry values skilled workers who can handle service, languages, and systems, and a training provides you with a stronger foothold than unskilled work in the same field.

§A trade with mobility

Service and reception competencies are international. Many use the trade as a springboard to work abroad on ships or in international hotel chains. At the same time there are good opportunities to advance internally — from reception towards front office management and beyond. You have a qualification that can take you many places.
