You train for a niche in the health system. It's a small, specialized profession, but precisely because of that your skills are hard to replace. Most hospital technicians work in close connection with hospital departments within hearing and the nervous system — or in private clinics that solve the same tasks.
§Where you can work
Which workplaces are relevant depends on your specialism. As an audiology assistant you typically work around hearing — on hospital audiology departments, with ear, nose and throat doctors, in private hearing clinics or with hearing aid manufacturers. As a neurophysiology assistant you work with examinations of brain, nerves and muscles, often on neurological or neurophysiology departments at a hospital.

§What drives the demand
The need for examinations of both hearing and the nervous system is linked to a population that lives longer. More elderly means more with hearing loss, and more with neurological diseases that need to be investigated. This is a fundamental driver behind the fact that the profession is still in demand. At the same time, the professional group is small, so even a modest need can be felt clearly.
§The technology changes the work
The equipment is constantly becoming more advanced and digitalization is taking up more in both examinations and documentation. This does not mean that humans become superfluous—quite the opposite as a professional you must be able to operate interpret and quality assure what the devices deliver and explain to the patient what is happening. Being able to keep up with new technology is part of the job.
§The future of the trade
With the name change to audiology and neurophysiology technician education from August 2026 it also marks that the trade's content is developing. The basic need — to examine hearing and nervous system in real people — does not disappear but the way it is done and job titles develop. This speaks for a trade with a stable future where you will continually learn new things.
